Is Water Inside an Outdoor Light Normal?

A small amount of water in a designated drainage area may be normal for an outdoor light designed to let rainwater escape.

However, the following conditions are not normal:

Should Every Opening Be Sealed With Silicone?

No. Applying silicone over every opening may make the water problem worse if it blocks a drainage or ventilation path.

Silicone may be appropriate around certain mounting points or cable entries when required by the installation instructions. However, it should not be used to cover an unidentified opening without confirming its purpose.

A qualified installer should determine:

  • Which joints need to be sealed
  • Which openings must remain clear
  • Whether the fitting requires ventilation
  • How the cable should enter the housing
  • Whether the mounting surface needs additional protection
